According to the Telegraph (UK), these warnings were presented during the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Phoenix. Scientists explained that oral bacteria are increasingly linked to inflammation and infections in various organs—from the brain to the gut and joints.

Direct Link Between Oral Health and the Brain
Professor Alpdogan Kantarci of the University of Minnesota noted that periodontitis, also known as advanced gum disease, can increase risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia.

Recent research indicates that individuals with mild to moderate conditions who maintain regular oral hygiene or visit dentists for professional cleanings show significantly better cognitive responses.

Animal studies have shown that periodontitis may increase brain inflammation, and pathogenic oral bacteria can cross the blood-brain barrier.

Joint and Digestive Diseases
Dr. Felipe Andrade presented evidence suggesting that gum disease pathogens may play a role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nobuhiro Kamada explained that oral bacteria can affect the gut microbiome balance, potentially increasing the risk of inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer.

Concerning Dietary Patterns
Experts warned that diets high in sugar and ultra-processed foods contribute to higher rates of tooth decay and gum disease, noting that obesity and low physical activity further exacerbate the problem.

The Necessity of Daily Brushing
Scientists recommend brushing teeth two to three times daily, especially after consuming sugary or sticky foods.

For those who can only brush once a day, it should be done before bedtime.
