Common Mistake in Asthma Treatment
Dr. Natalia Ninashiva, a specialist in allergy and immunology, stated that many asthma patients manage their symptoms using bronchodilators only, while neglecting inhaled glucocorticosteroids—which she considers the biggest mistake in treating the disease.

She explains that medications like salbutamol, fenoterol, and ipratropium bromide work by quickly widening the airways and relieving immediate symptoms, but they do not treat the underlying inflammation, which can worsen the condition over time.
Dr. Ninashiva emphasizes that modern treatment methods allow for effective asthma management even in mild cases.
“No patient, even those with mild asthma or infrequent attacks, should rely solely on bronchodilators,” she said.
“All patients—regardless of age or disease severity—should use inhaled glucocorticosteroids, as they are the foundation of treatment. These medications help control inflammation and prevent asthma from worsening.”
