The United Kingdom faces an exceptional summer as heatwaves persist and widespread wildfires break out across several regions. Recent estimates show that rising temperatures have cost the British economy approximately £4.4 billion in lost output from the beginning of the year through the end of July.

Citing the research center Verdant, The Guardian reported that these losses resulted from reduced worker productivity and cut working hours, alongside heat damage to equipment and infrastructure.
The center warned that the annual cost could exceed £25 billion by 2030 if heatwaves continue to escalate at the same rate.
This coincides with expanding wildfires, as British fire services have responded to more than 950 fires in England and Wales since the start of the year. This includes 185 fires during the first ten days of August, while July recorded more than 450 fires—the highest monthly total on record.
The heightened risk of wildfires stems from repeated heatwaves, severe drought and lack of rainfall, and dry soil and vegetation cover. These are further exacerbated by climate change impacts that increase the severity and duration of hot and dry spells. Additionally, consecutive wet periods followed by prolonged heatwaves create larger quantities of dry, highly combustible vegetation.
Temperatures are expected to reach 38°C on Thursday, while large parts of England and Wales face drought conditions, putting further strain on water resources and emergency services.
