In an interview with The New York Post published on Wednesday, Trump added that he expects to meet with Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, emphasizing that the leaders of the parties involved in the war are "getting along very well" despite the stalling of peace talks.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has not appeared publicly since the outbreak of the war on February 28, following joint US-Israeli airstrikes that injured him and killed his father, the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with other members of his family.
Speaking about the younger Khamenei, Trump said: "He is definitely involved. Yes, I think they have a lot of respect for him," adding that his absence from public appearance has prolonged the peace talks due to their reliance on the slow exchange of messages through intermediaries.
He continued: "They say he gives approvals, because things have been done this way for a very long time. It was his father, then him, and I assume it is a matter of succession. But we seem to be getting along very well."
