The new defense strategy, issued by the Pentagon on January 23, states that “the United States seeks a more peaceful and prosperous Middle East.” The authors of the strategy note that U.S. allies and partners in the region are the only ones capable of achieving this transformation.

They added, “Our mission is to support them in these efforts and to strengthen the solid foundation laid by the prudent and persistent diplomacy of U.S. President Donald Trump.”

The strategy considers that U.S. allies and partners in the Middle East should bear primary responsibility for deterring Iran and its affiliated forces in the region and defending against them, including providing strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself and enhancing its integration.

The Pentagon added that the United States will retain its ability to take focused and decisive actions to defend its interests in the Middle East.

Combating ‘Islamist Terrorists’ a Priority in Africa

According to the strategy, the priority in Africa is to prevent “Islamist terrorists from using safe havens in the region” to launch attacks on the U.S. homeland.

The strategy affirmed that Washington will maintain its ability to take “direct action against Islamist terrorists capable of striking” the U.S. homeland and is determined to do so.

It also added that the United States will strengthen the counterterrorism capabilities of its allies and partners in Africa. — (RT)
