Patel added that forensic teams have been deployed to the scene, where they are examining the suspect's weapon and the spent shell casings found at the site of the attempted breach.
On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump described the suspect as a "potential killer," noting that he was in possession of "many weapons."
During a press conference at the White House, Trump explained that the man stormed a security checkpoint, adding: "One officer was shot, but he clearly survived thanks to wearing a very good bulletproof vest."
He continued, "We looked at all the circumstances of what happened tonight, and I will say, as you know, it is not a particularly secure building."
