Beirut, Lebanon — Russian airstrikes against Daesh extremists in Syria have killed 18 fighters in 24 hours, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday.اضافة اعلان

Russian airstrikes on territories held by Daesh occurred in desert areas of the Hama and Raqqa provinces.

The Britain-based war monitor said the death toll could rise since at least 22 others were wounded in the attacks, some of them seriously.

The latest of the 230 air raids carried out in Syria this year by Russia came after two Daesh attacks in the Deir ez-Zor province killed nine fighters allied to Kurdish forces on Wednesday, the Observatory said.

Daesh's self-proclaimed "caliphate" was defeated in the same province three years ago, but Daesh fighters have continued to harass the forces that now control the region.

The Kurdish forces leading the battle against Daesh in northeastern Syria are supported by Arab tribal fighters.

Daesh launched a massive attack on a Kurdish-run prison last month. It is unclear how many inmates were released, but more than 250 extremists were killed in subsequent fighting.

Last week, a US special forces raid in northwestern Syria killed the organization's leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi. Daesh has not yet acknowledged his death nor announced a successor.
