The foreign ministers of Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Algeria, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Egypt and Yemen strongly condemned and categorically rejected Colombia’s decision to open its embassy in Jerusalem.
In a joint statement, the ministers said the move contravenes relevant UN Security Council resolutions and undermines international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
The ministers reaffirmed that any measure or decision aimed at changing the historical and legal status of occupied Jerusalem, or recognizing it as the capital of Israel, is null and void and carries no legal effect.
They said the position is consistent with relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, particularly Security Council Resolutions 476 (1980) and 478 (1980), which reject attempts to alter the character or status of Jerusalem and call on states to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city, which is part of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967.
According to the statement, the ministers urged the Colombian government to reconsider and reverse the decision, fulfill its obligations under international law, and refrain from taking measures that undermine the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
