Mamoun Gharaybeh, director of the Amman office at the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA), said on Tuesday that the administration offers free olive oil testing at its food laboratories in Shafa Badran and Irbid to verify the oil’s quality and suitability for human consumption.

Speaking to Al-Mamlaka TV, Gharaybeh explained that the administration tests olive oil using laboratory indicators, including acidity levels and the concentrations of different fatty acids. He stressed that oil quality cannot be determined by its colour or by whether it solidifies when placed in a refrigerator.
“The administration inspected 155 olive oil presses across the Kingdom before they began operating. It is currently conducting a second round of inspections during the production phase to verify compliance with standards and labelling requirements on oil containers, including the name of the press, the weight and the food product details. It also recommends disposing of the container after it has been used.”

He noted that the inspections are being conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Royal Department for Environment Protection and the Association of Olive Press Owners as part of efforts to monitor olive oil production and marketing.
Gharaybeh urged consumers to purchase olive oil from announced festivals and markets operating under the supervision of regulatory authorities. He reiterated that the oil can be tested free of charge at the administration’s laboratories, regardless of where it was purchased.
