Published in Clinical Nutrition, the study found that eating peanuts with their skins daily enhances cerebral blood flow and verbal memory in older adults.
The research was conducted at Maastricht University with 31 healthy volunteers aged 60 to 75, each consuming 60 grams of peanuts daily for 16 weeks. Results showed:
3.6% increase in cerebral blood flow
5.8% improvement in verbal memory
Reduction in blood pressure
Co-researcher Peter Joris explained that increased blood flow, especially in the frontal and temporal lobes responsible for memory and focus, provides better oxygen and nutrient supply to neurons, which helps maintain cognitive health.
The positive effects were attributed to the nutrient-rich composition of peanuts, including plant protein, L-arginine, unsaturated fats, polyphenols, fiber, and antioxidants in the skins, which enhance vascular flexibility, reduce inflammation, and support brain protection and function.
