Amid the wave of criticism surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese star received unexpected support from one of the key figures who shared an extraordinary period of success with him at Real Madrid, as Zinedine Zidane expressed his appreciation for his former player at a time when Portugal’s captain is going through one of the most controversial periods of his career.

Comparisons between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have become less intense in recent years, with the debate increasingly shifting in favor of the Argentine star. Ronaldo, however, has continued to find the net despite a decline in his scoring rate, according to French website Foot Mercato.
Ronaldo’s latest controversy, however, was not limited to his performances. His conduct with the Portugal national team sparked widespread debate, particularly after he reportedly disagreed with coach Jorge Jesus’ decisions during the international break. After starting the first match, the 41-year-old remained on the bench for the entire second game.
Ronaldo was expected to start the third match as a substitute, but he decided to leave the national team camp, amid reports that he was seriously considering retiring from international football. Amid the criticism directed at him, Zidane offered clear support, expressing his appreciation for Ronaldo’s career and what he achieved during their time together at Real Madrid.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Zidane said: “We must applaud his remarkable career. I was fortunate to have him with me, as he helped me win many titles. Salute to Cristiano! I have always had great respect for everyone I have spent time with.”
The comments reflect the appreciation of a coach who knew Ronaldo closely and could provide an important morale boost to the Portuguese star amid the uncertainty surrounding his international future.
