Mahrez, 35, has been training in Dubai to maintain his fitness. During the transfer window, he was linked with several clubs in Europe, including Italy's Como and Spain's Deportivo La Coruña, as well as South American side Botafogo. A return to Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab was also among the possibilities before his attention reportedly turned to Qatar.
Al-Shamal currently sit second in the Qatar Stars League and have Algerian players Baghdad Bounedjah, Omar Rafiq and Nassim Ben Aissa in their squad. The club is also competing in the AFC Champions League this season, a competition Mahrez won twice with his former club Al-Ahli over the past two seasons.
