Streets surrounding the university were flooded with police and ambulance vehicles hours after gunfire erupted on the campus, where examinations were taking place at the time.

The shooting is the latest in a long series of attacks on schools and universities in the United States, where efforts to restrict the possession of firearms continue to face political obstacles.

Six hours after the shooting, the gunman was still at large, while around 400 police officers were deployed across the university campus.

US President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the incident, describing it as “a horrific thing,” and adding, “All we can do right now is pray for the victims.”

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said at a press conference, “I can confirm the deaths of two people and that eight others are in critical but stable condition.”

Authorities later reported that a ninth person, who was “injured by gunfire shrapnel,” was also taken to hospital.

Brown University President Christina Paxson told reporters late Saturday night that ten of the eleven victims were students. (AFP)
