The explosion occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, located about 100 kilometers west of Nashville, causing several deaths, although officials have not yet confirmed the exact number.
Chris Davis, Humphreys County Police Chief, described the incident during a press conference as "one of the most devastating situations I’ve experienced in my career," adding that it will take time to determine the cause.
He said, "There won’t be a brief explanation for this," noting that investigators from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are at the scene.
Asked to describe the building where the explosion occurred, Davis said, "There’s nothing to describe… the building has been leveled."
Aerial footage aired by CNN showed the structure reduced to rubble, with debris and ash scattered among a few parked cars in a nearby garage.
Initially, Davis stated that 19 people were missing, but WSMV-TV later reported that one person previously listed as missing was found safe at home.
