ABU DHABI — UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed
Al-Nahyan died aged 73 on Friday, state media said, after battling illness for
several years.
"The Ministry of Presidential Affairs condoles the
people of the UAE and the Islamic world... on the passing of Sheikh Khalifa Bin
Zayed Al-Nahyan on Friday, May 13," the official WAM news agency said.
“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced that there
will be 40 days of official mourning with flags at half mast and three days
closure of ministries and official entities at the federal and local levels and
the private sector,” the agency wrote on Twitter.
The Sheikh was the Emir of Abu Dhabi and the supreme
commander of the UAE Armed Forces since 2004. He has also served as the
chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council since the late 1980s
