The Egyptian man was killed on the Israeli side of the border. The three Israeli soldiers were killed during a fire exchange, it was reported.

According to Israeli media, the spokesperson for the Israeli army said that the forces are continuing search operations in the area.

Israeli forces were investigating the circumstances of the incident, and later provided an update saying that hours later a second exchange of gunfire occurred in the area, and that a gunman was killed.

Israeli forces added that it was investigating suspicions that the gunman had earlier crossed the border.

The three Israeli soldiers were shot several hours after security forces thwarted an attempted drug smuggling operation near the Nitzana border crossing between Israel and Egypt.

It was not immediately clear whether the incidents were related and with whom the military was trading fire.
