Li will start his role at OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, on Tuesday, reporting directly to the company’s CFO, Sarah Friar.
A spokesperson for OpenAI told Reuters that the appointment aims to “ensure the presence of a senior leader with a comprehensive vision of the company, empowered to make swift decisions.”
At Google, under Alphabet, Li led enterprise business development for Google Cloud and DeepMind, along with the strategy and exploration teams.
Since joining Google in 2011, Li has worked on over 60 deals, including acquisitions and strategic investments totaling more than $50 billion, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The move follows OpenAI’s recent hire last month of former Amazon executive Torben Severson as Vice President and Head of Global Business Development.
In September, OpenAI also appointed Mike Liberatory, former CFO of Elon Musk’s xAI, as its Chief Financial Officer.
Li additionally serves on the advisory board of Alphabet’s independent growth fund, CapitalG, which has invested in companies such as CrowdStrike and Airbnb.
