According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed employees on Wednesday that the company’s next major product will not be a wearable, but rather a small, screenless device that is fully aware of its user’s surroundings.

Altman described it as “small enough to sit on a desk or fit in a pocket,” suggesting that it could become the “third primary device” alongside the MacBook Pro and iPhone. He emphasized that the device will act as an “AI companion” integrated into everyday life.

This announcement follows OpenAI’s acquisition of “io”, a startup founded last year by Jony Ive, the legendary Apple product designer. The deal, structured as a stock swap, was valued at $6.5 billion, and Ive is expected to play a key role in shaping the device’s design and innovation strategy at OpenAI.

Altman noted that this new type of device could potentially add up to $1 trillion in market value for OpenAI by creating an entirely new product category—distinct from smartphones, wearables, and smart glasses introduced by other tech companies.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining secrecy around the project to prevent competitors from copying the concept before its official launch. However, a leaked recording of his remarks to staff, later obtained by The Wall Street Journal, has raised questions about his trust in the team and whether more details might emerge prematurely.
