Instagram and Facebook are rolling out a set of new restrictions for teenage users, including a two-hour daily time limit, overnight blocks, and expanded parental controls.

Meta announced the changes Wednesday as part of an agreement with a bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general. Pending judicial approval, the restrictions will automatically apply to users under 18 in the participating U.S. states and territories.
Here's what families can expect to change:
A two-hour daily limit across Instagram and Facebook
By default, teens will be capped at two hours a day combined across Instagram and Facebook. That time is cumulative — usage on both apps counts toward the same limit — and Meta says it will also merge usage totals across multiple accounts if it identifies them as belonging to the same teen. Teens won't be able to disable the limit without parental approval, though direct messaging won't count against it.
Instagram and Facebook will largely go dark overnight
From midnight to 6 a.m., teens will lose access to most core features on both apps — including Feed, Stories, Explore, and Reels. Direct messaging will stay active during those hours so teens can still stay in touch with friends and family.
