Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5.5 just six days after releasing Opus 5.5, targeting everyday AI uses such as writing emails, summarizing documents, organizing notes and preparing presentations.اضافة اعلان

The company’s performance results indicate that Sonnet 5.5 has moved significantly closer to the more powerful Opus 5.5, while delivering faster responses at a lower operating cost, potentially making it the default choice for most everyday tasks.

Faster Responses and Greater Efficiency
Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 generates responses more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5, while offering improved writing quality and the ability to handle clearly defined everyday tasks.

The increased speed is particularly important in long conversations involving multiple questions and follow-ups, as reducing response times at each step can noticeably improve the user experience.

The company also says the model requires significantly fewer tokens to complete the same task, helping reduce costs.

The model remains priced through the API at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens the same rates as Sonnet 5. However, Anthropic says lower token consumption can reduce the cost of an individual task by up to 30%.

By comparison, using Opus 5.5 costs roughly twice as much per token as Sonnet 5.5.

Narrow Gap Between Sonnet and Opus in Benchmarks
One of the most notable performance indicators for Sonnet 5.5 came from a benchmark measuring AI models’ ability to perform real-world tasks associated with 44 different occupations.

Sonnet 5.5 scored around 1,844 points, compared with 1,846 for Opus 5.5—a difference of just two points.

This represents a significant improvement over the previous Sonnet 5, which scored 1,449 points on the same benchmark.

Sonnet 5.5 also outperformed Opus 5.5 on one coding benchmark, although Opus maintained its lead on other programming tests.

These results do not mean Sonnet has become comprehensively more capable than Opus. Opus 5.5 remains designed for more complex tasks, particularly large-scale projects, ambiguous problems and work requiring the tracking of numerous interconnected elements over long sessions.

However, the results indicate that the gap between the two models has narrowed on common everyday tasks.

When Is Opus 5.5 the Better Fit?
Opus 5.5 remains the highest-end model in the Claude 5.5 family, targeting use cases that require greater analytical and long-term reasoning capabilities.
These include large-scale coding projects, complex analysis and tasks requiring a broad context window and the ability to track large amounts of interconnected information.

Tasks such as drafting emails, analyzing documents, brainstorming, conducting research and preparing presentations are directly targeted by Sonnet 5.5.
As a result, Sonnet could shift from being a lighter option to becoming the default model for everyday tasks, with users switching to Opus when additional capabilities are needed.

Where Is Claude Sonnet 5.5 Available?
Sonnet 5.5 is currently available through Anthropic’s platforms, including the Claude API under the name claude-sonnet-5-5.

It is also available through Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

The model is available across Claude’s various plans and has replaced Sonnet 5 as the default model for users on the Free and Pro plans.

In Claude and Claude Code, the model operates by default at the Medium effort level, focusing on response speed and lower token consumption. Developers using the Claude Platform receive the High effort level by default.

Smaller Model on the Way
Anthropic also revealed that a smaller model called Haiku 5.5 will arrive in the coming weeks.

The model is designed for high-volume tasks where keeping costs low is a priority, expanding the range of options available within the Claude 5.5 family.
A Shift Toward Everyday Use

The specifications of Sonnet 5.5 reflect Anthropic’s focus on improving everyday AI applications rather than concentrating solely on delivering the most powerful model.

Its higher speed, lower token consumption and performance approaching that of Opus on some benchmarks make Sonnet 5.5 primarily suited to everyday tasks that do not require the highest levels of computing power.

Opus 5.5, meanwhile, remains more focused on complex tasks and projects requiring lengthy, multi-stage analysis.
