Google has announced the launch of a new experimental feature within its research program Search Labs, called “Web Guide.” This feature aims to redesign the online search experience by organizing results using artificial intelligence instead of displaying a traditional list of links. “Web Guide” is powered by Google’s Gemini AI model and uses a technique known as Query Fan‑out, in which multiple related sub-queries are sent out simultaneously. The algorithm then gathers and classifies the results into topic-based groups to make exploration and discovery easier.
One of its standout features is the smart categorization of results—pages are shown under organized subheadings such as “Comprehensive Guide” or “Community Experiences.” This makes it easier for users to access relevant, structured content. Rather than just showing traditional links, this approach broadens discovery to include various sources such as niche websites and platforms like YouTube and Reddit, offering users a wider perspective on the topics they search for. This is particularly helpful for complex queries that require multi-faceted answers, such as step-by-step processes or informed decision-making.
Differences and Additional Features
In terms of how it compares to other Google Search features:
Web Guide reorganizes real internet results into structured topic clusters to help users browse content more clearly and purposefully.
AI Overviews offers a concise summary generated directly by the AI model, based on multiple sources, without necessarily showing clear link references.
AI Mode provides a more interactive experience, allowing users to directly engage with the system and get instant responses via text or voice.
Each feature offers a distinct way of presenting information—ranging from structured browsing to quick summaries and real-time interaction—catering to different user needs. Web Guide does not replace these features but complements them, focusing on making actual search results clearer and more objective.
Accessing the Experience
The feature is currently available to users enrolled in Search Labs and can be activated through the Web tab in the search interface. Users can switch at any time between the traditional view and the categorized version. Google has confirmed that this experience will eventually be integrated into the official search tab once the testing phase ends and user feedback is analyzed.
