The World Health Organization announced on Thursday that the outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in Uganda has come to an end, while noting that neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo has not yet managed to bring the virus under control.

The announcement regarding Uganda comes after the government declared the country free of the disease on July 28, following an outbreak that caused 20 cases and two deaths there.
The WHO monitored the situation until this week to make sure there were no undetected chains of transmission.
Dr. Marie-Roseline Bélizaire, WHO emergency preparedness official for the African region, said at a regional meeting that cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have continued to rise despite some progress.
The outbreak in the DRC is the second-deadliest in the country's history, and continues to outpace containment efforts.
The Congolese government said the death toll has surpassed 2,700, with the number of cases rising to more than 5,600 as of Tuesday.
Bélizaire added: "Transmission is still very active... We've slowed the pace of spread, but we haven't yet managed to break this curve."
