Safadi's trip to Damascus represents the first official visit by a Jordanian foreign minister to Syria since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011. It is preceded by a meeting that took place between Safadi and Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in September 2022 on the sidelines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.

Safadi’s visit to Syria, which will be followed by a stop in Turkey, aims to express Jordan's solidarity with the two countries in facing the aftermath of the recent earthquakes.

Standing with the Syrian peopleOn the sidelines of the meeting, Safadi said that the visit “represents a point on the path to reaching a solution for the Syrian crisis.”

The Foreign Minister told reporters that Jordan “will do everything it can to support its Syrian brothers,” Hala News reported.

Safadi said that the visit “represents a point on the path to reaching a solution for the Syrian crisis.”
“Jordan's message is clear,” he said, “and we stand with the Syrian people to overcome this ordeal.”

Discussions during Wednesday’s meetings will focus on the humanitarian situations and relief needs in Turkey and Syria, as the Kingdom continues to provide them with aid in implementation of His Majesty King Abdullah’s directives.

On February 7, King Abdullah had phoned Assad to offer condolences to the families of the earthquake victims and express the Kingdom’s solidarity with Syria in this time of crisis, and its readiness to support its neighboring country with relief assistance and aid.

Safadi stated on Wednesday that the coming days will witness further aid packages from Jordan, as directed by the King.
