Construction has begun on a new road connecting the Irbid Ring Road, known locally as "Street 100," to the new Princess Basma Governmental Hospital in the Zabda area, a project officials say will ease traffic congestion in downtown Irbid and provide faster access for patients and emergency vehicles.

Omar Al-Maharmeh, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, said the project is valued at approximately 4.4 million dinars and has a 365-day construction timeline. The road will stretch roughly 2.6 kilometers and span 20 meters, with two lanes separated by a median strip.
Al-Maharmeh said the work includes excavation, backfilling, paving and asphalt layering, along with construction of a surface water drainage network and a 115-meter box culvert over the Wadi Al-Ghafr stream. The project also covers slope protection, full road lighting and the installation of traffic safety features, including signage, road markings and reflectors.
Al-Maharmeh said the road is part of government efforts to complete the infrastructure needed to operate the new Princess Basma Hospital, a key health facility serving Irbid Governorate and the northern governorates. He said the new route will reduce traffic pressure in downtown Irbid, shorten travel times for ambulances and emergency cases, and improve the connection between the Irbid Ring Road and the hospital for both medical staff and patients.
Some residents have welcomed the project while calling for broader urban planning to accompany it. Samer Al-Tamimi, a local resident, said the road should be treated as part of a comprehensive development plan rather than a standalone construction project, given the population growth and investment activity expected in the surrounding area. He said incorporating nearby land into a coordinated urban plan, covering residential, commercial and service uses along with internal roads and stormwater infrastructure, could prevent disorganized expansion once the hospital draws more traffic and development to the area.
