AMMAN — President of the Roots Society for Human Rights, Fawzi Samhouri, said that the Jordanian government must renew the Defense Order related to debtors' imprisonment, regardless of the amount owed. اضافة اعلان

Failure to do so could lead to a new phase of prison overcrowding, he warned.

Prison overcrowdingThe call comes as the director of the Rehabilitation and Correctional Center Department with the Public Security Directorate, Brig. Gen. Falah Al-Majali, recently revealed that the percentage of inmates in rehabilitation centers has reached 163 percent.

This indicates that prisons in Jordan are facing a critical level of overcrowding and services offered to inmates will be negatively impacted.

The suspension of debtors' imprisonment orders, previously mandated by Defense Order No. 28, are set to come to an end this coming Sunday.
