Government Communications Minister and government spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani said Jordan’s population census will begin on Thursday, October 1, 2026, and continue for one month, with field teams collecting data across the Kingdom.

Speaking during a meeting held at the Ministry of Interior on Monday, chaired by Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya and attended by Director General of the Department of Statistics Haider Freihat and the governors, Al-Momani said around 12,000 field researchers will be involved in collecting data as part of the census.
He noted that the census could face some challenges, requiring administrative governors to intervene in certain cases to address issues and ensure the process runs smoothly.
Al-Momani added that awareness and informational materials about the census will begin airing on Wednesday, ahead of the start of field operations on Thursday. The government’s digital spokesperson will also release an awareness video explaining the census and how it will be conducted.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya stressed the importance of cooperation in ensuring the success of the population census.
He said a liaison officer should be stationed at each governorate headquarters to facilitate communication with governors and address any issues that may arise during the census.
For his part, Department of Statistics Director General Haider Freihat said the census will provide a comprehensive count of the population and housing units across the Kingdom. Jordan has been divided into 24,000 statistical blocks for the operation.
Freihat clarified that the census is not an economic survey but focuses on demographic and social aspects. It will include 65 questions, most of which are social in nature.
He said one of the main challenges will be determining the number of non-Jordanians residing in the Kingdom, noting that preparations for the census began around a year and a half ago.
The field teams underwent one month of training and are fully prepared to carry out the census, while around 9,500 teachers will also participate in the operation.
Freihat said several operations rooms have been established to monitor the census, including one to track progress and another to oversee field operations.
He stressed that the census aims to improve and update data held by government institutions, which have been relying on the latest official figures available from 2015.
A Department of Statistics liaison officer will also be assigned to each governorate to monitor and coordinate census activities. In addition, a media team has been formed to address rumors that may emerge during the census.
