AMMAN — The Ministry of Justice said that courts handed down alternative punishment in 109 cases nationwide, of which 48 have been carried out as a substitute to a prison term, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.اضافة اعلان

Under legislation and regulations introduced earlier this year, a jail term can be replaced with having a convict tethered to an electronic bracelet capable of recognizing the geographical area the convict is allowed to move in, among other things.

The bracelet, which can be worn on the wrist or ankle, is also a substitute for administrative detention.

The ministry said in a statement that it bought 1,500 bracelets and is willing to buy 3,500 more, depending on the need.

The statement said Jordanian courts conducted 7,641 remote court hearings last month. The remote hearings project was launched in July 2020, following legislative amendments to the code of criminal procedure of 2018, which authorized the use of modern techniques while conducting trials.
