Amman Municipality inspection teams have shut down 30 sites being used to illegally reserve parking spaces since a crackdown began two days ago.

Informed sources at the municipality said the inspection teams were formed jointly by Amman Municipality, the Public Security Directorate, and the Ministry of Interior. Teams detained 15 people working as valet operators without licences and illegally occupying parking spaces; all 15 were referred to the administrative governor for further action.

The campaign also seized equipment used to reserve parking spaces: 60 traffic cones, 30 agricultural buckets, and 25 plastic barriers.

Mahmoud Al-Assaf, head of the municipality's parking permit committee, said only five to six valet companies in Amman are operating legally, while the rest are in breach of regulations. He said valet companies are required to hold a commercial licence from the Ministry of Industry and Trade as well as a professional licence, and must register each specific location where vehicles will be parked, which also requires its own professional licence.

Al-Assaf said that during the campaign, sites were found to hold neither a valet service licence nor a site permit.

He added that valet parking is permitted only at designated construction-adjacent locations - such as premises serving commercial establishments that have contracted the service - or in a dedicated parking garage.

Under the valet site licensing regulations, workers in this profession must obtain security clearances and hold Jordanian citizenship. Al-Assaf noted that a dedicated committee has been established within the municipality, comprising all relevant parties, to issue licences for this profession.
